ROUTINES & COMPETITIONS

THE KALEIDOSCOPE

"Kaleidoscope" is one word for a group of butterflies, and it's what we call each current team of Monarchs working on a competitive or showcase routine. Everyone ranked Experienced has the opportunity to represent BB in competition. After competing or performing a major routine with us, members earn the title Crowned to celebrate their accomplishment!

Dawn To Dusk

For SSD's Dawn to Dusk - Competitive Division

Choreographed by Alessia Lightbell

August 5th, 2023

Mirroring a custom soundtrack, each section of this routine has its own character. Sunrise and sunset are similar, making use of serpentines to represent the swirling colors of the sky, but where sunrise expands outwards, sunset brings the riders closer until they disappear into the night. Day & Night make use of clear formations and individual moves, fast-paced and energetic for daytime with slow, spread-out ones for the twinkling stars of the night.

"La Danse Macabre"

A collaborative routine

Choreographed by Alessia Lightbell

October 10th, 2023

For La Danse Macabre, or "the dance of death," we invited our Open Server to join us for an afternoon in making a routine together! While we prepared a bit beforehand, the entire routine was basically choreographed, taught, and recorded in one day within just a few hours. It was a big, fun experiment for us, both with dressage and community events, and inspired us to invite our community to open Simplified Dressage Lessons every week.

"Waltz of the Snowflakes"

For our December 2023 Winter Showcase

Choreographed by Alessia Lightbell

December 19th, 2023

Taking inspiration from the Nutcracker dance of the same name, we wanted to create something elegant and magical for the winter season. This routine challenged us with 6-fold symmetry and a returning snowflake motif, as well as swirling, growing partnered serpentines in the middle "stormy section." We had an incredible time performing live, and joined the attendees of the event in some chaotic-fun foot dressage featured at the end of the video.

"The Wind Turns"

For SSD's Frondescent Fête - Competitive Division

Choreographed by Alessia Lightbell

May 31st, 2024

We explored seasonal depression and the emotional experience of winter turning to spring in this routine. I opens slow, uncertain, and asymmetrical, but as time moves on, the group takes up more space, flowing and blooming into the spring section with stable, symmetrical choreography at last. Though it can seem foolish to believe in a hopeful future, "one morning the wind turns, and there is thaw. And so I must still have hope." —Vincent VanGogh

"Chronicles of Youth"

For SSD's Chronicles of Youth - Competitive Division

Choreographed by Alessia Lightbell

June 30th, 2024

Leaning into nostalgia, this routine represents the story of BB "growing up" from Red Champions into BB, and we also got the chance to revisit our memories of RC and the dressage community from of many years ago. The routine opens with the iconic Gen. 2 friesians riding classic, simple choreography, and shifts to a growing group of knabstruppers using more complex dressage to represent how both BB and our dressage skill have grown.

Symphony of Skills

For SSD's Symphony of Skills - Competitive Division

Choreographed by Alessia Lightbell

July 10th, 2024

SOS (or as we affectionately referred to it, "sauce,") gave us the refreshing opportunity to play with distinct moves! Taking on SSD's challenge of using the moves lock and crescent was interesting, since we don't use those moves often with the SDM, but the requirement of using slants was right up our alley. We snuck in one of our own signature moves, Sir Bounce, to open the routine, and worked hard to put together one of our cleanest-ever routine takes!

"Jupiter"

For SSD Internationals - Competitive Division

Choreographed by Alessia Lightbell

November 23rd, 2024

The grand and emotional piece of music, "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity," by Gustav Holst feels like the representation of what BB means to us. We began work on this routine in January of 2023, wanting to create a mesmerizing visual to go with its captivating melodies. We couldn't finish it then, but finally, on the eve of our 2.5 year anniversary and for our Internationals debut, we were able to celebrate how far we've come and bring that vision to life.
